CHAPTER 25

ONE OF US: CLEMENS

Clemens was getting ready to turn in and had just finished showering when the call notification from the hotel room’s holoscreen woke him up. “Answer,” he said and Esther appeared on the screen.

“Hey honey. How’s it going down there?”

“Not good!” Esther answered. “They found Hannah!”

“What?!”

“These guys blew in here with guns and they might have shot some people. We couldn’t see. We’re locked in a room.”

“How many?”

“Four, I think.”

“We’re on our way! End call.”

By the time Clemens and the rest arrived, Esther was in a heated discussion with the Dr. Malloy in the main foyer. Sylvia stood with her arms crossed, seething, while Rebecca paced the floor.

“Esther! Are you okay?” Clemens called out as they ran through the automatic sliding front doors.

She ran to her husband and embraced him. “They took her! They took her!” Esther cried.

Dr. Malloy was visibly shaken. “I am so sorry.”

“How did this happen?” Clemens demanded.

“They appeared out of nowhere with guns. They shot an attendee and used his access card to break into the surgical unit.” His lip was trembling. “She hadn’t even been prepped for the procedure. She . . . she was pretty out of it. I was with another patient when they busted in. They were brandishing their weapons and I got on the floor.” The doctor started blubbering as tears streamed down his face. “I was s-s-scared.”

Clemens felt sorry for the young doctor. “It’s okay.” He placed a hand on the doctor’s shoulder. “It’s okay. Look at me. Do you have any idea where they took her?”

The doctor shook his head.

“Did they say anything at all?”

The doctor thought for a moment. “One of them said something about needing to charge up.”

Of course. If they were leaving town tonight, they would need a full charge to get back to Winnipeg, if that is where they were headed. “Where’s the nearest Esso?” Clemens asked.

“Oh, no. They didn’t drive here,” the doctor said. “They came in a helicopter. They would have to charge it at—”

“At the airport,” Clemens said, finishing his sentence. “Come on, gang.” He turned to thank the doctor and then said, “We’re going to bring her back here and you’re going to get that damn thing out of her. Got it?”

The doctor nodded. “Yes, sir. Good luck!”

They piled into the school bus and Dutch started loading and distributing weapons to his fellow officers as the bus navigated toward the airport.

“Do I get a gun?” James asked.

“No, son,” his father said. “I need you to stay on the bus with your mother. Understood?”

“Yes, sir,” James said, sounding dejected.

“He could fly a drone.” Dutch said. “Might be good to keep an eye in the sky.”

“Sh—yeah, can I, dad?”

Clemens looked to his wife, who didn’t offer up any opposition. “Alright.” The boy did know how to fly a drone and it wasn’t a bad idea to have another pair of eyes on the situation, especially since it was dark and the drone had night vision.

The airport was dark and desolate.
